Best free AI 3D model generators for game assets

Short answer: start with Tripo or Rodin to learn for free, and pay for a plan only when you need to download a lot or ship commercially. Here is the honest catch: most AI 3D generators let you generate for free, but limit downloads, exports or commercial use on the free plan. Every free tier, credit and format below comes from each tool's own pricing page or docs, checked October 2026. Plans change often, so check again before you pay.

Looking for Luma AI? Luma's App Store notes say it sunset Genie, its text to 3D generator, on January 1, 2026. Luma now focuses on video and images, so it is not a pick here.

Best free tiers to start

Tripo

Generates 3D models from text or images, with auto rigging options.

Pricing: Freemium, from $20/mo (billed yearly). Beginner rating: 5/5. Quick results and beginner friendly UI.

Our top free pick for learning. Tripo's pricing page lists 200 free credits a month and says the free plan includes retopology and texture editing up to 4K. Free models are public and non-commercial, so plan to upgrade before you sell a game.

Rodin (Hyper3D)

Creates detailed 3D assets from images or text prompts.

Pricing: Freemium, from $30/mo. Beginner rating: 4/5. High quality output with a simple interface.

Rodin works on a pay by result model: you can generate and preview for free, then spend credits only on a result you want. Direct credits cost $1.50 each. The Creator plan starts at $30 a month ($24 a month billed yearly) and adds unlimited export and Smart Low-Poly.

Easiest to use, but downloads need a paid plan

Meshy

Turns text or images into textured 3D models ready for game engines.

Pricing: Freemium, from $20/mo. Beginner rating: 5/5. Very easy text or image to 3D workflow.

Meshy is one of the easiest tools here to go from a prompt or picture to a textured model. Free accounts get 100 credits a month, which is fine for trying it, but Meshy's help center says free accounts cannot download models made with Meshy 6 or Meshy 7. Pro is $20 a month and includes unlimited downloads. Meshy also has plugins for Blender and Unity. Try Meshy (affiliate link, see our disclosure).

Sloyd

Generates game ready 3D props and buildings you can tweak with sliders to dress levels.

Pricing: Freemium, from $15/mo. Beginner rating: 4/5. Slider based editing is friendlier than raw 3D modeling.

Good for quick props like crates, barrels and buildings. The free plan lets you try AI generation once a day, but exports only community models, so you need Plus to export your own.

Scan real objects instead

Polycam

Scans real objects and spaces into 3D models using your phone.

Pricing: Freemium, from $30/mo. Beginner rating: 5/5. Point your phone and get a 3D model.

If you have a cool rock, toy or shoe on your desk, scanning it can beat generating it. The free plan has limited captures and exports glTF, which Godot reads directly.

Not a free pick for game assets

Spline

Browser based 3D design tool with AI generation for interactive scenes.

Pricing: Freemium, from $15/mo. Beginner rating: 4/5. Friendly 3D editor that runs in the browser.

Spline's free plan is a nice 3D editor, but its pricing page lists AI 3D generation from the Hobby plan up, and glTF export with color and textures on Pro.

Kaedim

Converts images into production ready 3D models for game studios.

Pricing: Paid (unverified). Beginner rating: 2/5. Priced and pitched for studios.

Kaedim's FAQ says it has no free credits, subscriptions or trials, and that its off the shelf plans are temporarily closed in favor of custom plans for studios.

The workflow: from prompt to playable

  1. Generate. Start with one simple prop, not your hero character. For image to 3D, use a clear picture of a single object on a plain background.
  2. Check the model. Open it in Blender, which is free. Turn on the Statistics overlay to see the triangle count. Look for holes, floating bits, and a sensible size. AI models often have far more triangles than a small prop needs.
  3. Reduce or retopologize if needed. The quickest fix is Blender's Decimate modifier, which cuts triangles while keeping the shape. Some generators can do this for you: Tripo lists retopology in its free toolkit, and Rodin lists Smart Low-Poly on its paid Creator plan.
  4. Texture. Most generators give you a textured model. To redo the textures, Meshy's AI texturing accepts uploads in FBX, OBJ, STL, glTF and GLB, and Tripo includes texture editing on its free plan.
  5. Import into your engine.
    • Godot: export as GLB, the glTF 2.0 format Godot's docs recommend. Copy it into your project folder and Godot imports it. FBX also works in Godot 4.3 and newer.
    • Unity: export as FBX, which Unity's manual recommends, and drag it into your Assets folder. For GLB files, install Unity's glTFast package.
  6. Rig and animate characters with Mixamo. Upload your character as FBX (turn on "embed media" so textures come along), OBJ, or a ZIP with the OBJ, MTL and textures. Adobe says the auto rigger needs a humanoid in a neutral pose, centered, with no big extra parts like wings or tails. Pick an animation, download it as FBX, and import it into your engine.

Mixamo

Free Adobe service that auto rigs characters and applies ready made animations.

Pricing: Free. Beginner rating: 5/5. Free, drag and drop rigging and animations.

Free with an Adobe ID, and royalty free for games, per Adobe's Mixamo FAQ. Humanoid characters only.

FAQ

Can I make 3D game assets with AI for free?

Partly. As of October 2026, most AI 3D generators let you generate for free but limit downloads or commercial use. Tripo's free plan gives 200 credits a month, which Tripo says is about 13 models, with limited exports and non-commercial use. Rodin lets you generate and preview for free and spend credits only on results you confirm. Meshy gives free accounts 100 credits a month, but its help center says free accounts cannot download models made with Meshy 6 or Meshy 7.

Can I sell a game that uses models from a free plan?

It depends on the tool. Meshy says free plan models are licensed CC BY 4.0, which allows commercial use if you credit Meshy. Tripo's free plan is non-commercial. Sloyd's free plan is personal use only. Read each tool's current terms before you ship.

Which 3D file format should I use in Godot?

glTF 2.0, as a .glb or .gltf file. Godot's docs call it the recommended format. FBX also works through Godot's built-in ufbx importer in Godot 4.3 and newer.

Which 3D file format should I use in Unity?

FBX. Unity's manual says FBX is its internal import format and recommends it. Unity can also read OBJ and DAE. For GLB files, install Unity's glTFast package.

Is Mixamo free?

Yes. Adobe says Mixamo is free for anyone with an Adobe ID, with no Creative Cloud subscription, and its characters and animations are royalty free for games, including commercial ones. The auto rigger only works on humanoid characters.

Do AI generated 3D models need cleanup?

Often, yes. Check the triangle count, look for holes or floating bits, and check the scale before you import. The free program Blender can reduce triangles with its Decimate modifier.
