How to make a Roblox game with AI, free for beginners

Short answer: install Roblox Studio (free), open a Baseplate, and ask the built-in Assistant to plan and build a simple obby. Then playtest it, tell Assistant what is broken, and polish. If you already use an AI coding agent like Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, you can connect it to Studio's built-in MCP server instead. Everything below comes from Roblox's own docs and announcements, checked October 2026.

What you need

You do not need to know how to code. Roblox games are scripted in Luau, a language derived from Lua 5.1, but AI can write most of it for you while you learn.

The tools

Roblox Studio

Free editor for building and publishing games on Roblox, scripted in Luau.

Pricing: Free. Beginner rating: 4/5. Free with a built-in audience, though Luau scripting takes practice.

The free editor where you build, test and publish. Every game runs on the latest version of the Roblox engine, so keep Studio updated.

Roblox Assistant

AI helper built into Roblox Studio. It answers questions, writes and edits Luau scripts, builds objects, generates meshes, materials and textures, and can playtest your game.

Pricing: Free (unverified). Beginner rating: 4/5. Built into free Roblox Studio and can plan and build a first game for you, though you still playtest and fix what it makes.

Built into Studio. The easiest place for a total beginner to start.

What Roblox's built-in AI can do now

Roblox has a lot of official AI tools built in. Here is what its docs describe as of October 2026.

What about price? Studio is free. Roblox's Assistant guide does not list a price for Assistant (checked October 2026). The one usage cap it spells out is 50 procedural models in a rolling 24 hours. If you want to pick the AI model yourself, you can add your own API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google under Assistant settings, then Manage API Keys. You pay that company for what you use.

Also new: Build on phones. Roblox is rolling out Build, a tab in the Roblox mobile app that makes simple 2D and 2.5D games from a description. Roblox says it is rolling out gradually, starting with New Zealand, and playtesting inside Build is marked as coming soon. You get some free prompts each day and can buy more with Robux. If you later open a Build game in Studio, it permanently becomes a normal Studio game.

Your first Roblox game in an afternoon

This follows the Plan, Build and Playtest, Refine and Polish loop from Roblox's own beginner guide. Your results will look different from ours, because Assistant's answers change each time. That is normal.

  1. Install Studio. Download it from Roblox's Creator Hub, install it, and sign in with your Roblox account.
  2. Start a Baseplate. Create a new Baseplate, then click Assistant near the top right of Studio to open the Assistant window.
  3. Plan it. Switch the dropdown to Plan and try Roblox's example prompt: Plan a simple obby where players jump through increasingly difficult obstacle courses to reach the end. Include checkpoints so they don't restart from the beginning when they fall. Read the plan. If it looks too big, ask Assistant to make it smaller.
  4. Build it. Click Build. If you see a message that the response exceeded the maximum output length, click Continue and it picks up where it left off.
  5. Playtest it. Press Play and run the whole course. Can you make every jump? Do checkpoints save your spot? Does the end say you won?
  6. Fix it in plain English. Tell Assistant what you expected and what actually happened, like When I touch a checkpoint, nothing happens. If the Output window shows a red error, paste it in and ask what it means. Playtest again after each fix.
  7. Make it pretty. Try /generate_mesh a stone archway for the start, or /generate_material for a cool winning platform. Then nudge things by hand with the Move, Scale and Rotate tools. Small tweaks are faster by hand than by prompt.
  8. Publish it. Use File, then Publish. A new game starts out playable only by you and people you invite. Roblox is rolling out early tester invites for up to 10 friends. To go public for players 16 and up, Roblox requires an account in good standing that is at least 2 days old, an age check, and one question about age-restricted content. Reaching younger players takes more steps, like ID or face age verification, 2FA, and a content review.

Curious what Luau looks like? This is a classic kill brick. Put it in a Script inside a part, and any player who touches the part is knocked out and respawns. Assistant writes code like this for you, and asking it to explain each line is a great way to learn.

local part = script.Parent

part.Touched:Connect(function(hit)
  local humanoid = hit.Parent:FindFirstChildWhichIsA("Humanoid")
  if humanoid then
    humanoid.Health = 0
  end
end)

Using ChatGPT, Claude, Codex or Cursor with Roblox

You do not have to use Assistant. There are three ways to bring the AI you already use.

1. Copy and paste (easiest)

Ask a chat assistant like ChatGPT or Claude for a Luau script, then paste it into a Script in Studio. Tell it the script is for Roblox, and say where the script goes, like inside a part or in ServerScriptService. Paste any errors back in.

2. Connect an agent to Studio's MCP server

Studio has a built-in MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way to let an AI agent use tools in another app. Once connected, your agent can read and edit scripts, run Luau, explore your game, start and stop playtests, read the Output log, take screenshots of the viewport, and even generate meshes.

  1. Install your agent first, for example Claude Code, Codex CLI or Cursor.
  2. In Studio, open Assistant, click the ... menu, then Manage MCP Servers, and turn on Enable Studio as MCP server.
  3. Under Quick connect, flip the toggle for your agent. Roblox lists Antigravity, Codex CLI, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Gemini CLI and Visual Studio Code. Other agents can connect with a short config file instead.
  4. Restart your agent. A green dot in Studio shows it is connected.

Roblox's warning is worth repeating: a connected agent can read and change your open places, so only connect tools you trust.

Claude

AI assistant that writes game code, explains bugs and builds playable prototypes.

Pricing: Freemium, from $20/mo. Beginner rating: 5/5. Explains code clearly to beginners.

Claude Code is on Roblox's quick connect list.

OpenAI Codex

OpenAI's coding agent for the terminal, IDE and web. It can read your project, write code and use MCP servers.

Pricing: Freemium, from $8/mo. Beginner rating: 3/5. Very capable, but you work in a terminal or IDE.

Codex CLI is on Roblox's quick connect list.

Cursor

AI code editor that writes and edits game code from plain English requests.

Pricing: Freemium (unverified). Beginner rating: 3/5. Very capable but assumes some coding.

Roblox's own coding harness guide uses Cursor or VS Code.

3. Work on script files on your computer

If you want your agent or editor to work on real files, Roblox offers Script Sync. It mirrors your scripts to .luau files on your disk, so edits in Cursor or VS Code show up in Studio right away, and the other way too. Roblox's coding harness guide has you turn it on under File, then Beta Features. Pair it with the MCP server for anything that is not a script, like UI.

Want your whole project as files, not just scripts? Rojo is a popular community tool that syncs files on your computer with Studio through a plugin. Roblox's docs explain how to set it up, but note that Rojo is not maintained by Roblox. For a first game, Script Sync is simpler.

Can you make money?

Maybe, but treat your first game as practice. Roblox lets you sell things for Robux, like passes (a one time purchase, such as a permanent power-up) and developer products (things players can buy more than once). Your game has to be published first. To turn Earned Robux into real money through the Developer Exchange (DevEx), Roblox requires you to be at least 13, have at least 30,000 Earned Robux, a verified email and tax forms, among other rules. The standard rate is $114 USD for 30,000 Earned Robux.
