How to animate a 3D character for free

Short answer: rig your humanoid character for free in Mixamo and pick ready made animations, add your own moves with free AI motion capture from a phone video, then use Blender (free) to combine everything and export a GLB or FBX file for your engine. Every plan limit and license below comes from each company's own site, checked Oct 22, 2026. We only cover free plans.

DeepMotion note: its pricing page lists 25 credits a month for Freemium, while an older answer in its FAQ says up to 60 seconds a month. We went with the pricing page. Move One's credit and recording limits come from Move's pricing docs.

Step 0: get a character

You need a 3D humanoid model in a neutral pose, ideally a T-pose or A-pose. Free options: make one in Blender, grab one from a free library in free game assets for beginners, or generate one with an AI 3D tool. If you generate it, check the license first. Meshy's free plan models are CC BY 4.0, so you can sell them with credit, while Tripo's free plan is non-commercial (affiliate link, see our disclosure). More in Best free AI 3D model generators for game assets and Meshy vs Tripo.

Step 1: rig and animate with Mixamo (free)

From Adobe's Mixamo FAQ and Mixamo rigging help, checked Oct 22, 2026:

How it works: log in at mixamo.com, click Upload Character, then place the markers on the wrists, elbows, knees and groin. Rigging takes a few minutes. Then click Find Animations, pick a clip like idle, walk or jump, and download it. Repeat for each clip you need.

If the auto-rigger fails, Adobe's checklist says: the character needs clearly separate head, body, arms and legs, a neutral pose, no big extra parts like wings, tails or large hair, nothing else in the file (no cameras or helper objects), no gaps between body parts, the character centered at the origin, and a clean mesh.

Step 2: custom moves with free AI motion capture from video

Mixamo's library will not have every move your game needs. AI motion capture turns an ordinary video of a person into a 3D animation, no suit needed. Film one person, full body in frame, against a plain background, and keep clips short to save free credits.

Rokoko Vision (best free option for a game you will sell)

Rokoko Vision now lives inside Rokoko Create, alongside text-to-motion. The free Starter plan on Rokoko's pricing page (checked Oct 22, 2026) includes 30 seconds of Vision AI video processing a month, unlimited text-to-motion clips with 5 imports into Rokoko Studio a month, FBX export and 1 month of cloud storage. Rokoko Create's FAQ says all generated data from video-to-motion and text-to-motion can be used commercially. Rokoko says FBX exports can use skeleton presets including Mixamo, HumanIK and Unreal Engine Manny, which makes retargeting easier, but we could not confirm which presets the free plan includes. Importing and retargeting your own custom characters is listed under the paid Basic plan.

DeepMotion Animate 3D (free for practice only)

DeepMotion's pricing page (checked Oct 22, 2026) lists Freemium with no credit card, 25 credits a month, clips up to 20 seconds, up to 3 custom characters and FBX, BVH, GLB and MP4 output. Its FAQ says 1 credit equals 1 second of animation, face and hand tracking cost an extra 0.5 credit per second each, GLB export only works with custom characters, and you can upload your own FBX, GLB or VRM character. The catch: Freemium is for personal, non-commercial use, and DeepMotion says you need a premium plan to have licensed animation.

Move One (iPhone)

Move One is Move AI's single camera iPhone app. Move's docs (checked Oct 22, 2026) say the Free plan includes a one-time 30 credits that do not expire, free users can record up to 30 seconds, and Gen 1 costs 1 credit per person per second while Gen 2 costs 2. Free users cannot buy extra credits. Move's Blender plugin brings the FBX straight into Blender. We could not verify the free plan's commercial terms on Move's own site, because its pricing page did not load, so check before you ship anything made on the free plan.

Optional: hand animation with Cascadeur

Cascadeur's plans page (checked Oct 22, 2026) says the Free plan is free forever and includes the complete animation toolset, rigging tools, physics based tools, the inbetweening tool and animation unbaking for editing mocap. But it exports to .casc only, with no FBX or DAE, and allows only non-commercial use. Export to FBX, DAE, USD and glTF starts on the paid Indie plan, which is limited to licensees with under $100,000 in yearly revenue or funding. Full commercial use is on Pro. In short, Cascadeur Free is a good way to learn posing and physics, not a way to get animations into your game for free.

Step 3: Blender, the free glue

Blender is free software under the GNU GPL, and its license page says you are free to sell your work. Use it to collect your Mixamo and mocap clips on one character and export one clean file. From the Blender 5.2 manual (checked Oct 22, 2026):

  1. Import: File, Import, FBX. Blender's FBX importer brings each FBX take in as a separate Action.
  2. Keep every clip: give each action a clear name (Idle, Walk, Jump). The glTF exporter only exports actions linked to an object, so if you have multiple actions, make sure they are stashed or on NLA tracks.
  3. Export for Godot or three.js: File, Export, glTF 2.0, and choose glTF Binary (.glb), a single file with the mesh, textures and animations packed in. The default Actions mode is, in Blender's words, useful if you are exporting for a game engine, with an animation library of a character.
  4. Export for Unity or Unreal: export FBX. Blender's manual says FBX export uses its FBX add-on.

Blender is not on StarterLoot as a listed tool because it is not an AI tool, but it is the free piece that connects everything else. If you want an AI coding agent to drive Blender for you, see MCP for Blender.

Step 4: get it into your engine

Retargeting means playing an animation made for one skeleton on a different skeleton. If your character was rigged in Mixamo and your clips came from Mixamo, they already match. Clips from mocap tools or other characters usually need retargeting.

Godot

Godot's 3D formats page (checked Oct 22, 2026, Godot 4.7 docs) recommends glTF 2.0, as .glb or .gltf. It can also import .blend files directly if Blender is installed, and FBX through the built-in ufbx importer in Godot 4.3 and later. Drop your .glb into the project folder and Godot imports it. If your model has shape keys, set Export Deformation Bones Only to enabled in Blender's glTF export. To share animations between different skeletons, Godot's retargeting guide says to select the Skeleton3D in the Advanced Import Settings, create a BoneMap, and use the SkeletonProfileHumanoid preset, which auto-maps bones by name. New to Godot? Read Build a Godot game with AI coding agents.

Unity

Unity's model formats reference (checked Oct 22, 2026) says Unity uses .fbx as its internal import format and recommends FBX whenever possible. For humanoid retargeting, Unity's humanoid import page says to open the Rig tab in the Inspector and set Animation Type to Humanoid. Unity then tries to map your bones to a Humanoid Avatar. Unity's retargeting page says this lets you apply the same animation to different humanoid models without renaming bones, as long as each uses the Humanoid animation type with a configured Avatar.

Unreal Engine

Unreal's FBX content pipeline (checked Oct 22, 2026, UE 5.8 docs) imports skeletal meshes, animation and morph targets, and uses FBX 2020.2. To move animations between skeletons with different bone counts, names or orientations, use an IK Retargeter (Add, Animation, IK Rig, IK Retargeter in the Content Browser), which can keep hand and foot contacts with IK.

three.js

Load your .glb with GLTFLoader. The animations arrive as clips you play with an AnimationMixer, one mixer per animated object, and call update with the frame's delta time in your render loop. three.js also has an FBXLoader, but GLB is the simpler path. To reuse a clip on a different skeleton, the SkeletonUtils addon has retargetClip. All three docs pages checked Oct 22, 2026. Full walkthrough: How to make a browser game with three.js and AI.

FAQ

Is Mixamo really free for commercial games?

Yes, according to Adobe's Mixamo FAQ (checked Oct 22, 2026). Mixamo is free for anyone with an Adobe ID, needs no Creative Cloud subscription, and you can use its characters and animations royalty free in personal, commercial and non-profit projects, and Adobe lists creating video games as an example. It is not available for Enterprise or Federated IDs, or for users with a China country code.

Can Mixamo animate a dog, a dragon or a car?

No. Adobe says the auto-rigger and animation library are for bipedal humanoids only, and that large extra parts like wings, tails or big hair may stop the auto-rigger from working. For animals and creatures you will need to rig and animate in Blender yourself.

Can I use the free plan of Cascadeur for my game?

Not to ship it. Cascadeur's plans page (checked Oct 22, 2026) says the Free plan is for non-commercial use only and exports to its own .casc format only, with no FBX or DAE export. It is a good free way to learn animation, but you need a paid plan to export animations to a game engine.

Which free AI motion capture tool lets me sell my game?

Of the tools we checked, Rokoko. Rokoko Create's FAQ says all motion generated with video-to-motion and text-to-motion can be used commercially, and the free Starter plan includes 30 seconds of video processing a month with FBX export. DeepMotion's free Freemium plan is licensed for personal, non-commercial use only. We could not verify Move One's free plan license on Move's own site, so treat it as unverified.

Should I export GLB or FBX?

Use GLB for Godot and three.js. Godot's docs recommend glTF 2.0, and three.js loads it with GLTFLoader. Use FBX for Unity and Unreal, since Unity's manual says it uses FBX as its internal import format and Unreal has a dedicated FBX import pipeline for skeletal meshes and animation.

Why do my downloaded animations not play on my own character?

Usually because the skeletons do not match. Animations are stored per bone, so a clip made for one skeleton needs retargeting to play on a skeleton with different bone names or rest poses. Godot uses a Bone Map with SkeletonProfileHumanoid, Unity uses Humanoid Avatars, Unreal uses IK Rigs and the IK Retargeter, and three.js has SkeletonUtils.retargetClip. The easiest fix is to rig your character in Mixamo too, so every Mixamo clip matches its skeleton.
