Issue #1: Meshy for quick 3D props
Welcome to issue 1 of StarterLoot! Every week: one free or freemium AI tool a beginner can actually use, and where it fits in your game.
Tool of the week: Meshy
Meshy turns a text prompt or a reference image into a textured 3D model. It’s great for props when you’re prototyping: crates, barrels, weapons, rocks, all the stuff that fills a level while you figure out if the game is fun.
Try it in 10 minutes (free to generate):
- Sign up for the free plan (no credit card needed).
- Use Text to 3D with a simple prompt like “wooden treasure chest, stylized”.
- Spin the preview and check the shape and textures. If it fits your game, that is when you pay to download it as a .glb and drag it into Godot, Unity or Roblox.
The catch: the free plan gives you 100 credits a month (a textured Text to 3D model costs about 30), but Meshy’s help center says free accounts can’t download models made with Meshy 6 or Meshy 7. So free is for testing prompts. Pro is $20/mo with unlimited downloads, and paid models are yours with no credit needed. Free plan models are CC BY 4.0, so if you ever get one out, credit Meshy. (Checked on Meshy’s pricing page and help center, Oct 19, 2026.)

News worth knowing
- Unreal Engine 5.8 has an official MCP server. Epic’s Unreal MCP plugin (marked Experimental) lets AI agents work inside the editor, and Epic published an official Claude Code plugin to go with it. Setup guide
- Recraft’s free plan has a license catch. Recraft says free plan images are owned by Recraft and aren’t licensed for commercial use. Great for mockups, but upgrade before you ship. Free 2D art tools guide
From the workshop
I’m building a medieval archery FPS in Godot with Codex, going for CS Source style movement. I just ran a 3v3 playtest with friends to see how it plays.
