Localization

6 free localization tools, sorted by how friendly they are for beginners.

Localization means translating your game and adapting it for players in other languages. Even a small game can reach many more players on Steam or itch.io with a few extra languages, and it is much easier if you plan for it early.

Start by keeping every piece of player facing text in a string table instead of typing it straight into scenes or code. Godot and Unity both have free, built-in systems for this. Then use a machine translator for a first draft, and a translation management tool when you have volunteers or translators helping.

Machine translation is a draft, not a finished product. Ask a native speaker to check menus, tutorials and anything funny or emotional. Every tool here has a free plan or is free, and we checked the free limits on each official site on October 23, 2026.
