Mixamo vs Cascadeur for game animation
Short answer: to get a humanoid character moving in your game for $0, use Mixamo. It auto-rigs your character in the browser, gives you a library of ready made animations, and Adobe says you can use them royalty free in commercial games. Use Cascadeur when you want to make your own moves by hand and learn real animation, but know that Cascadeur Free cannot export to FBX or glTF and is non-commercial only, so getting its animations into a game means paying for the Indie plan. Every plan, limit and license detail below comes from Adobe's and Cascadeur's own help pages and plans page, checked Oct 24, 2026. We focus on free plans and mention paid plans only for context.

Engine support
Neither tool needs a plugin for a basic workflow. You export a file and import it. Here is what each engine's and vendor's own docs say, checked Oct 24, 2026.
| Engine | Mixamo | Cascadeur |
|---|---|---|
| Unity | Import the FBX. Unity's docs say FBX is its internal import format and best practice. | Official Export to Unity help page for FBX or Collada. Needs Indie or higher to export. |
| Unreal Engine | Import the FBX through the Content Browser. Retarget onto other skeletons with Unreal's IK Retargeter. | Official Export to Unreal Engine page (binary FBX, works with the UE5 Manny and Quinn skeleton). Live Link streams animation to Unreal 5.5 to 5.8 on Indie, Pro and Teams, Windows only. |
| Godot | FBX imports with the built-in ufbx importer in Godot 4.3 and later, per Godot's 3D formats page. Or convert to GLB in Blender. | Export GLB or glTF (Indie or higher), which Godot recommends. No Godot specific Cascadeur help page that we found. |
| Web (three.js) | Load the FBX with FBXLoader, or convert to GLB in Blender and use GLTFLoader. | Export GLB (Indie or higher) and load it with GLTFLoader. |
The tools
Mixamo
Free Adobe service that auto rigs characters and applies ready made animations.
Pricing: Free. Beginner rating: 5/5. Free, drag and drop rigging and animations.
The fastest free way to make a humanoid character move in a game. No subscription, no credits, and Adobe names video games as an allowed commercial use. The catches: humanoids only, a fixed animation library rather than your own moves, and Adobe's Mixamo FAQ was last updated in September 2021, so the service gets few visible updates.
Cascadeur
Character animation software with AI assisted physics and posing.
Pricing: Freemium, from $19/mo. Beginner rating: 3/5. Real animation software with a learning curve.
Real animation software you can learn on for free, with AI assisted AutoPosing so you move fewer controls to get a natural pose. The catch for game devs: Free saves to .casc only and is non-commercial, so plan on the Indie plan before any of it reaches your engine.
Who each tool is best for as a beginner
Mixamo is best for you if...
- You are making your first 3D game and just need idle, walk, run and jump clips.
- Your character is a humanoid in a neutral T-pose or A-pose.
- You want to sell or publish the game and spend nothing on animation.
- You do not want to install anything. Mixamo runs in the browser.
Cascadeur is best for you if...
- You want custom moves that no library has, like a signature attack or a weird creature walk.
- You want to learn how animation works, posing, timing and physics, before you pay for anything.
- You plan to pay for Indie once you ship, and you or your company earn or raise under $100,000 a year.
- You use Unreal on Windows and want Live Link streaming (paid plans).
Using both together
- Rig in Mixamo. Upload your humanoid as FBX (with embed media on), OBJ or ZIP, place markers on the wrists, elbows, knees and groin, and let Mixamo rig it. Save the rigged character to your computer, because Mixamo only keeps your last one.
- Grab base clips. Download the stock clips you need from Mixamo's library.
- Polish or make new moves in Cascadeur. Cascadeur's Mixamo rig help page says to import the Mixamo model with Import FBX/DAE, slightly bend the arms, then rig it with the Quick Rigging Tool. You can practice all of this on Free.
- Export. This is where Free stops. FBX, DAE, USD and glTF export start on Indie. If you are not ready to pay, keep using Mixamo clips for the game you ship.
Licensing gotchas
- Cascadeur Free is non-commercial. Even if you find a way to get the motion out, the license does not allow commercial use.
- Cascadeur Indie has a revenue cap. Under $100,000 a year in gross revenue or funding. Above that you need Pro.
- Mixamo needs a personal Adobe ID. Enterprise and Federated IDs, and China country codes, cannot use it.
- Your character model has its own license. Mixamo's license covers its characters and animations, not a model you got elsewhere. See Can I sell a game made with AI art?
What we could not verify
- Mixamo's download formats and options are not listed on Adobe's own help pages. We relied on Cascadeur's help page, which mentions binary FBX, ASCII FBX and Collada.
- Cascadeur's homepage lists AI Motion Generation (running, jumping, combat, idles and more), but its plans page does not say which plan includes it, so we treat free access to it as unverified.
- The $8 a month yearly Indie price is what the plans page showed on Oct 24, 2026. The page also advertises saving 32% on yearly plans, which matches Pro but not Indie, so check the price at checkout.

FAQ
Is Mixamo or Cascadeur better for a beginner?
Mixamo, if you want a humanoid character walking, running and jumping in your game today. You upload a model, place a few markers, and pick ready made animations in your browser, and it costs nothing. Cascadeur is real animation software for making your own moves by hand, with AI helpers like AutoPosing. It is a great way to learn animation, but the free plan cannot export your work to a game engine.
Is Cascadeur free?
Yes, Cascadeur has a Free plan with no time limit. As of October 24, 2026, Cascadeur's plans page says Free includes the complete animation toolset, rigging tools, physics based tools, inbetweening and animation unbaking, but exports to .casc only, with no FBX or DAE export, and allows only non-commercial use. To export FBX, DAE, USD or glTF you need the Indie plan, listed at $19 a month.
Can I sell a game that uses Mixamo animations?
Yes, according to Adobe's Mixamo FAQ (checked Oct 24, 2026). Characters and animations are royalty free for personal, commercial and non-profit projects, and Adobe lists creating video games as an example. Mixamo needs a free Adobe ID and is not available for Enterprise or Federated IDs, or for users with a China country code.
Can I use Cascadeur Free for a commercial game?
No. Cascadeur's plans FAQ says Free and Educational plans do not allow any commercial use. The Indie plan allows commercial use if you, or the company you are part of, earn or raise less than $100,000 a year. Pro and Teams allow full commercial use.
Can I use a Mixamo character in Cascadeur?
Yes. Cascadeur's help center has a page on using the Mixamo rig in Cascadeur. It says to export the model from Mixamo as binary FBX, ASCII FBX or Collada, import it with Import FBX/DAE, bend the arms slightly, then rig it with the Quick Rigging Tool. Getting the finished animation back out to your engine still needs a paid plan.
Which one works with Godot?
Both, through files rather than plugins. Godot's docs recommend glTF 2.0 and also import FBX through the built-in ufbx importer in Godot 4.3 and later, so a Mixamo FBX can go straight into Godot. Cascadeur can export GLB or glTF, which Godot prefers, but only on the Indie plan or higher. We did not find a Godot specific page in Cascadeur's help center.
Can Mixamo or Cascadeur animate animals?
Mixamo cannot. Adobe says its auto-rigger and animation library are for bipedal humanoids only. Cascadeur lists quick rigging, AutoPosing and retargeting for quadrupeds like cats, dogs and horses on its homepage, but its plans page puts AutoPosing for quadrupeds on the Pro plan.
